Every Sunday I’m left as an internet widow by my partner, who writes the wildly popular website Gastropoda. So while she was ranting online about food and politics, I was posting pictures. The site was designed by Audrey Chen and Billie Mandle, making a site that reflected both my dreams and photography in an even cleaner and more clever mode than what I imagined.

Do 1 Thing is an initiative started by Najlah Fenny Hicks and Pim Van Hemmen to help homeless teens. Over 25,000 adolescents age out of the foster care system each year in the United States. 40% of these teens will become homeless.

On Valentine’s Day 2009 they organized a massive photoshoot at the Covenant House in several states. Here’s Shaniqua, one girl I met at Covenant House in New York City.

This is also my first very humbling attempt to create a soundtrack using garage band.

A week ago, Mary Panzer, the photo curator, critic and author of the ICP Infinity Award winning book “Things As They Are” came to MediaStorm to write a story for the Wall Street Journal headlined ” Photojournalism for the Web Generation.” She mentioned my first two MediaStorm pieces: Reuters “Bearing Witness, Five Years of the Iraq War” and “One Man Brand,” the first MediaStorm workshops story I produced that was created by Lucy Nicholson and Jassim Ahmad from Reuters.

As I mentioned to a friend: “Sometimes you’re in the forest and aware of the trees but it takes someone special to describe what those trees actually look like.” Please share my revelation.

My work as multimedia producer and editor on Bearing Witness was awarded the top prize in the Multimedia- Photo/Video at the new New York Photo Awards. It’s a huge thrill for me as Bearing Witness was my first MediaStorm project.

Tuesday I start leading a graduate seminar at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in the photojournalism/documentary photography graduate program. I’m excited because the students I’ve met thus far have been anxious and ready to learn.

I will say they’re quick: Interesting how they automatically re-enacted the famous opening shot from Reservoir Dogs when I turned around to shoot them on the street in Queens last week.

Photographing a Rock Star..of Science!

I used to do a lot of portraits when I started working for magazines in NYC. One great recent portrait was Professor E.O.Wilson. He’s the Mick Jagger of Science, often referred to as “Charles Darwin’s Heir” and a genius. He is an amazing thinker, Pulitzer prize-winning author, the man who coined the term “biodiversity” and also a very gentle man. I made this image at the Darwin exhibition at the American Museum of Natural History in NYC. I always like to photograph people in their element. And yes, I used a flash;) Don’t you always use a flash with a rock star?

I love talking with interesting people. Last week I had breakfast with George Jardine, a very cool guy from Adobe who helped design Lightroom. We met at one of my favorite restaurants in NYC and talked about a few things that we’re both extremely passionate about, with the big one being photography.

Two days later we got together again and this time he recorded our conversation for his great series of podcasts. We spoke about photography, new media, films, audio and where this might all be going. It was a fascinating and enlightening conversation for me plus I got to wear a very cool and amazingly efficient microphone on my ear, just like a popstar.

Portfolio: Conde Nast launches a new magazine

New York media is abuzz today with the launch of the CondeNast’s website for the publishing companies latest, long awaited business magazine called Portfolio.

There’s lots of cool multimedia content including infographics and video.

Since Conde Nast has some of the most successful — and profitable — magazine launches of the past few years, no wonder everyone sits up and looks (and listens and watches.)
