Here are the workshops I’m teaching this summer. Click the name of the workshop for more info. Hope to see you this summer.

Multimedia Storytelling August 6-Aug 12, 2012

Nord Photography Workshops, Oslo, Norway
This week long workshop is split into two levels. The first level will focus on a basic multimedia introduction for photographers who want to add audio to their images. The second level will explore motion and the more advanced concepts of storytelling.

Advanced Multimedia Storytelling July 1-6, 2012

Santa Fe Photo Workshops, Santa Fe, NM.
Our first stories were spoken. Soon we learned to write, and then we learned to create visual stories by making photographs. Now technology has closed the circle, allowing us to easily add the power of sound and motion to create more powerful stories in multimedia. During this Workshop, students will produce a short powerful multimedia story that is reported, captured and edited in Santa Fe.
(here’s a blog post from a previous workshop)

Tuscany Photo Workshops, Tuscany, Italy
A comprehensive multimedia workshop.

HAPhotographer Mexico City, Mexico
Photographers of all levels are welcome at this 3 day workshop held in Mexico City. Day 1 consists of a presentation and travel narrative by Bob Sacha followed by a seminar led by Adobe, while the remaining days are spent photographing the beautiful basaltic prisms and the Ex Hacienda de Santa Maria.

Maine Media Workshops Rockport, ME

In this master class, students learn to use all the tools of multimedia more fully. Video b-roll is discussed, more advanced interview techniques, rack focusing, time-lapse and sequence photography is explored along with workflow and story structure. This medium to advanced level class is the next step, a practical guide to using these techniques in the field. Here are three great projects from the 2010 class.

The site was designed by<a href="http://www.octopuscake.com/"target='blank'> Audrey Chen and Billie Mandle, making a site that reflected both my dreams and photography in an even cleaner and more clever mode than what I imagined.

Grazia Neri Agency was the best European photo agency I worked with: they sold every story I sent them. So I was sad when they called it quits. But now there’s Luz, born from the ashes of Grazia Neri and with an eye toward new media also.

I’m also a big fan of it’s founders, especially Alberto Giuliani, an amazing young photographer. Great to be in such good company.

It was a lot of fun to be teaching students who were interested and motivated and willing to listen, pitch in with all their energy, and try new things.

The final stories are on the blog. I think they’re really good, especially for a group of undergrads who had never recorded any audio and never created a multimedia story before. Oh, and they produced them under deadline too.

Hats off to Stevenson University student Mike Jett for creating the awesome poster too!

Do 1 Thing is an initiative started by Najlah Fenny Hicks and Pim Van Hemmen to help homeless teens. Over 25,000 adolescents age out of the foster care system each year in the United States. 40% of these teens will become homeless.

On Valentine’s Day 2009 they organized a massive photoshoot at the Covenant House in several states. Here’s Shaniqua, one girl I met at Covenant House in New York City.

This is also my first very humbling attempt to create a soundtrack using garage band.

Starbucks brought their “partners” to New Orleans, 10,000 strong, for a management conference but also to pitch in for 4 hours each of community service. Yes, that’s 40,000 hours of community service. It was a wonderful thing to see.

I lit and shot the interviews and also shot video and stills in the field but the most fun was shooting and editing the small piece in the middle the this great story where Mary O’Connor and her team try to serve 10,000 cups of hot coffee to every one of the partners in the audience at the same time. Phew, what a race that was.

I had spent a year in New Orleans (pre Katrina) working on a story for National Geographic Magazine so I was thrilled to go back with my MediaStorm colleagues in 2008 to shoot, interview and record this multimedia piece for Starbucks.

I’ve started to establish a new standard for editing images and video and I’m calling it the “jaw dropping” moment form of editing.

If my jaw drops open when I see it, I tag it and keep it. Or if I exclaim, out loud in the office, “holy X&!#!” I usually mark and keep that frame or section. (Lucky for me my colleagues put up with my id.)

I did a lot of jaw dropping and exclaiming when I was producing and editing my most recent MediaStorm piece for the International League of Conservation Photographers. The photography is amazing and the video by James Balog and his Extreme Ice Survey made my jaw drop and caused an expletive. Balog and his team have turned what’s going on with climate change into stunning motion.

As usual, I learned some new things. One of them is that great photography and video stops you in your tracks, and when it’s connected with important issues, it has the power to engage and hopefully motivate people. This project also reminded me that everything in our world is connected.

The video is a “run away” but I’m sure the folks at ILCP will fix that soon.
